“It is a betrayal of humanity and international law.”

Harsh Statement from UCWEP President Hasan Taşkın
After six more journalists lost their lives in the recent attacks in Gaza, UCWEP President Hasan Taşkın made a very harsh statement.
Taşkın emphasized that it is unacceptable for Israel to target journalists despite international warnings and said, “These systematic attacks on journalists are a clear attempt to prevent the truth from coming out.”
According to data from the Palestinian Journalists’ Union, journalists Islam al-Kumi and Khalid al-Medhun were killed last week. In the attack on Nasser Hospital on August 25, 2025, Reuters photojournalist Husam al-Mısri, Al Jazeera cameraman Muhammed Selame, Meryem Abu Dekka, who worked for Independent Arabia and AP, and NBC News reporter Muaz Abu Taha lost their lives.
Taşkın said, “We are deeply saddened to have lost six of our valuable colleagues. We offer our condolences to their families, loved ones and the entire press community. With Israel’s latest attacks, the number of journalists killed in Gaza has increased to 244. This situation is a clear genocide against the press.”
The statement also reminded that 62 thousand 622 Palestinians have lost their lives in Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023, 157 thousand 673 people have been injured, and hunger-related deaths have begun in the region due to the blocking of aid.
Taşkın made the following call to the international community:
“Targeting innocent civilians, healthcare workers and especially journalists must stop. Israel must immediately stop this brutality against journalists and comply with international law. Journalists are witnesses of the truth, every attack against them is an attack on humanity and truth.”
